3PM
This is my favorite time of the day. Why? Because it's the quietest time while the sun is out. There is literally no one on the streets. Everything is completely deserted. For some reason this is the time when all Italians are recuperating from lunch and are either passed out or just relaxing somewhere. Granted this is also the time when most businesses close. Especially on the weekends. So what do I do during this time? Why I wander the streets or go for a run along the waterfront where no cars or people will bother me or get in my way.
Just today I geared up for a run at 3pm. The sun was out so I didn't wear a jacket. As I stepped outside I was welcomed with cold air and a nasty wind. I thought, who have I become? It's Sunday and freezing cold outside yet I'm running in shorts and a tank top in brisk winds that instantly dry any sweat that manages to escape. For those who don't know, I joined a gym in October after a month in Italy with no exercise. I then started running 3-4 times a week on the treadmill. Eventually I decided that I should try to do 5k a few times a week. Took me about a month to build up to that. Then I thought, well, let's go for 10k. That took a while but sometime in late November I reached my goal. Now I find myself setting these crazy goals for running a certain amount of kilometers a week. Just this morning I thought about staying in. But then I realized I only needed about 3 clicks to beat my weekly personal best. So, for that, I ran today in the cold.
I know this may not seem impressive to some, especially my Nike crew who runs like 5 miles a day at lunch without breaking a sweat. But to me, it has really been something great to accomplish. I started running on a treadmill about 2 years ago. I'm not genetically designed to run long distances, so I never really went over 2 miles until last summer when I was finally able to reach 3 miles a couple of times. But that was only when the gym would played Bon Jovi's “It's My Life”. Oh yeah! So for me, this is a big deal.
Anyways, I would someday like to run a half marathon. I fear signing up for any races since I really have to be in the mood to run or it just doesn't work. I fear that race day will be one of those “I don't wanna run...” days. So if I am going to do any races I will need a lot of encouragement. Any takers?
Just some random thoughts I was having. I can't wait to run in the sunshine and warm weather as spring approaches.
By the way Aunt Patti, you are a true inspiration to be training for a full marathon. You're my star!
